2nd Chance Dog Rescue was founded in 1997.   Its roots are in the Pittsburgh area of Pennsylvania.  In the fall of 2002, a new branch opened on the west coast when founder and president, Jill Parnham, moved to California.  We are located in the hills above Acton, as a registered non-profit organization and an approved shelter facility  and  since being established we have always received an "A" grade from L.A. County Animal Care and Control.  We are also a proud member of Petfinder.com, Adopt A Pet, an adoption partner with PetSmart, and an ambassador for Pro Plan!

We are devoted to the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of abused, abandoned or unwanted dogs.  Our priority is on foundlings, dogs from the homes of terminally ill owners and those left behind after their owner has passed on.  When space is available we will also help with dogs whose owners are divorcing or have lost their home.  Financial limitations prevent us from having more than 12 dogs in our care at any one time.  Each of our rescued dogs is placed in a foster home where house breaking and basic house manners are taught (or re-taught!).  During this time, an assessment is made of the dog and its particular needs with regard to a permanent home. Veterinary care is ongoing.  Any obvious health problems are treated and all necessary shots given.  All dogs are spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

We do our best to evaluate each dog thoroughly and give potential adopters detailed and accurate information.  We do not adopt out aggressive dogs, nor do we accept them into our program.  Anyone interested in adopting a pet from 2nd Chance will first be asked to complete an Adoption Application.  This form can be obtained by calling our office, or by clicking on the "Dog Adoption Application" link above.  Please note that all our dogs must have house privileges.  Potential adopters will be required to provide references and give permission for a home check.  Subject to approval, the adopter would then be invited to visit the dog in its foster home.  During this time, questions will be asked about lifestyle, expectations of the dog, etc.  Such questions are not aimed at offending anyone, but at trying to place the right dog in the right home.  Remember, all our dogs have been rejected as least once, and we want their new homes to be as close to perfect as possible.   Assuming the adopter is interested in pursuing the adoption process, representatives will then bring the dog to the home for a brief visit.  If the adoption process is approved to proceed, the adopter will be asked to foster the dog for one month.  At the time of delivery, the adoption fee is payable together with a check to cover the cost of microchip registration.  If the dog is returned within the one-month trial period, all monies are refunded.  Our adoption fees are:

Dogs under 7 years old - $200, Senior dogs - $100 *

Please contact us about our Senior Dogs for Senior Citizens (62 and older) discount program!

After the initial month long trial period, and if all is going well, the adoption becomes final. However, 2nd Chance reserves the right to reclaim the dog during the first month if the terms of our Adoption Contract are not being met.  Ongoing support and advice is available for the lifetime of the dog.  If the dog is surrendered at any time in the future, it must be returned to 2nd Chance, but the adoption fee is not refunded.

Further, we will always take back any dog adopted from us.  Please also note that we offer low cost grooming and boarding to any of our alumni.  These fees go directly towards helping other dogs in our foster program.

PET LINK PROGRAM

Our Pet Link program is provided as a service to existing owners who need to find new homes for their pets.  For a small fee we will advertise your pet on our website. We will provide space for one photo and a short bio on each pet, together with contact information. 2nd Chance does not get involved beyond providing publicity, and can only advertise spayed or neutered animals. Further, we do not accept liability for the health, temperament or future well being of any pet placed through this link, nor will we take responsibility for the animal if the placement is unsuccessful.

If you would like to make a financial contribution to us, your donation is tax deductible. All donations go directly towards caring for the dogs in our program. Dog beds, toys, food, training treats, kennels and crates are always needed and greatly appreciated. Pick-up can be arranged. Please feel free to call our office for more information.
